Week 3 - Camouflage & Period Make-up

  • Face shaping, contouring and full corrective make-up
  • Application of make-up for men and children for commercials, catalogue shoots, T.V. and film
  • Shading and highlighting techniques
  • Period make-up for T.V., film and theatre
  • Fitting and trimming false eye lashes
  • Camouflage make-up



Week 4 - Cut & Blow Dry Hair
  • Health and safety
  • Use of tools
  • Sectioning and cutting female hair
  • Cutting male hair
  • Trimming long hair
  • Use of products



Week 5 - Contemporary & Fashion Hair Styling
  • Cutting and setting hair
  • Electrical equipment; use of tongs, straightener, hot rollers, etc
  • Different pattern roller settings
  • Dressing long hair
  • Fashion looks for editorial

Week 6 - Period Hair Dressing
  • Blocking and cleaning wigs
  • Researching period styles
  • Dressing both wigs and own hair
  • Hair - Medieval - 19th Century
  • Hair dressing - Highlighting 20th century
  • Cleaning, tonging and applying facial hair



Week 7 - Casualty
  • Applying bruises, grazes, cuts and scratches
  • Scars, stitched wounds, open wounds and blood effects
  • Burns of all types (1st to 3rd degree), scalding and electrical burns
  • Continuity over time, dirt, sweat and tears
  • Spots, diseases, blisters and warts
  • Student project day - re-creating skills learned into visually accurate casualty victim



Week 8 - Body Painting & Air Brushing
  • Application of various body painting products, sponging and brush work
  • Researching and developing designs
  • Use of air brush - achieving finished effects
  • Painting free-hand, illusion, shading and blending
  • Cutting stencils
  • Executing final design to commercial standard



Week 9 - Character Make-up
  • Gender change - Female/male including application of hair stubble
  • Ageing - painted and applied latex - to include hands
  • Race change using camouflage techniques to lighten from dark and darken from light skin tones
  • Male/female - natural look progressing to glamorous
  • Accurate "look-a-like"; student's own research, finding reference picture - contemporary or historical.



Weeks 10 & 11 - Prosthetics
  • Measuring head for bald cap, making pattern to fit individual head size, transferring to block
  • Making bald cap using cap plastic
  • Designing, planning and preparing both realistic and fantasy final effect, e.g. fashion, science fiction, ageing, etc
  • Application of bald cap, blending edge, materials and techniques to match skin tone, natural look
  • Develop through to "fantasy" subject, researched, designed by student



Weeks 10 & 11 - Prosthetics
  • Understand and execute life casting technique
  • Mould making and casting
  • Sculpting and learning the different processes and materials involved in prosthetic making
  • Removing appliance from mould
  • Application of pieces
  • Colouring a prosthetic - using a variety of make-up products
  • Final design - student's own

These two weeks combine bald cap making and producing, making and applying a prosthetic piece


Week 12 - Speed Work & Portfolio Building

  • Straight and corrective make-up and hair (complete look)
  • Period make-up and hair (complete look)
  • Speed work to brief - scripts supplied
  • Portfolio building
  • Appropriate steps to develop work contacts
